What to look out for when buying safety footwear
Check safety requirements: Choose the appropriate class (S1–S3) for your workplace.
-
Fit and width: Ensure there is sufficient space for your toes and that your heel is securely held in place.
-
Comfort and ergonomics: Cushioning, breathable materials and an ergonomic footbed enhance performance.
-
Material and workmanship: High-quality leather, robust textiles and non-slip soles are essential.
-
Intended use and design: Sturdy boots for construction and trades, lightweight trainers for logistics or indoor use.
-
Care and lifespan: Regular cleaning, waterproofing and checking the soles extend their lifespan.
-
Additional features: Check for water and chemical resistance, anti-static properties or orthopaedic adjustment options.
Safety classes and certifications
The correct safety class depends on your workplace:
-
S1 safety footwear – Antistatic shoes with a closed heel and energy-absorbing heel counter — ideal for dry construction sites and production areas.
Safety footwear S1P – All the features of S1 plus a puncture-resistant midsole to protect against sharp hazards such as nails or broken glass.
-
Safety footwear S2 – Includes S1 features and is also water-repellent — suitable for damp work areas with splashing water or brief exposure to wet conditions.
-
S3 safety shoes – Combine S2 features with a puncture-resistant midsole and slip-resistant outsole. Ideal for wet, uneven surfaces or those littered with splinters and nails.
All ATLAS safety shoes are regularly certified by independent testing institutes, so you can rely on lasting quality. You can find even more information on the individual safety classes and their features in our ATLAS guide.
Comfort and ergonomics
Safety must not come at the expense of comfort. ATLAS shoes feature a 3D cushioning system that absorbs shocks and relieves pressure on the joints. The clima-stream concept maximises breathability, balances moisture levels inside the shoe and optimally regulates the ambient temperature. The use of high-quality, highly breathable upper material, the thermoregulating inner lining and the Klima Komfort® insole ensures a unique wearing experience.
Many models are orthopaedically adaptable (DGUV Rule 112-191) and allow the use of custom insoles without compromising safety certification.
Care and usage tips
Regular cleaning: Remove dirt using a soft brush and lukewarm water.
Waterproofing: Protects against moisture and maintains breathability.
Sole inspection: Replace the shoes as soon as the tread is noticeably worn.
Check insoles: Use only approved orthopaedic insoles to maintain safety certification.
Fit and width system
Every foot is unique. ATLAS therefore offers a multi-width system (W10, W12, W13, W14) to ensure that even wide feet are provided with optimal support. A precise fit prevents pressure points and blisters, and contributes to long-term foot health. You can find out how to determine your correct size in our size guide.

How can I find out my shoe size for Atlas safety shoes?
You can determine the right size for your Atlas safety shoes quickly and easily – either directly via the Atlas ‘Scan your Feet’ app or by measuring your feet manually. Both methods ensure that you find the perfect fit for maximum comfort and protection. You can find further information in our size guide.
How can I find out the width of my Atlas shoes?
The best way to determine the ideal width for your Atlas safety shoes is using the Mondopoint method. This internationally recognised measurement method takes into account not only the length but also the width of the foot to ensure the best possible fit.
To determine the correct width, the circumference of the foot is measured at the widest point of the ball of the foot. Based on these measurements, the appropriate shoe width can then be determined using the Mondopoint system.
