What does ‘S3’ mean in the context of safety boots?

S3 refers to a protection class in accordance with EN ISO 20345. S3 footwear offers: a closed heel, a toe cap (200 joules), antistatic properties, energy absorption in the heel area, resistance to fuel, water resistance (60 mins), a puncture-resistant sole and a treaded outsole.

What is the advantage of the BOA® system?

The BOA® Fit System allows for adjustment in a matter of seconds, with millimetre precision, even whilst wearing gloves. It ensures even pressure distribution, eliminates the risk of tripping over loose laces and is maintenance-free. The stainless steel cables are extremely durable and come with a lifetime guarantee.

Are GORE-TEX® safety shoes really waterproof?

Yes, GORE-TEX® safety footwear is permanently waterproof and highly breathable at the same time. The membrane allows water vapour (sweat) to escape, but prevents moisture from getting in. These properties are maintained throughout the product’s lifetime.

Can I use orthopaedic insoles in safety boots?

Many ATLAS models are certified in accordance with DGUV 112-191 for orthopaedic modifications. Please check for the relevant labelling. The original insole can be replaced with orthopaedic insoles without compromising the protective effect.

How do I look after safety boots properly?

Clean the boots daily with a brush and a damp cloth. Leave them to dry naturally (not on a radiator!). Treat the leather monthly with suitable care products and reapply the waterproofing regularly. Check the soles and seams for damage.

What does the S3 classification mean for safety boots?

S3 in accordance with EN ISO 20345 means: toe cap (200 joules), enclosed heel, antistatic properties, energy absorption in the heel area, waterproof upper, puncture-resistant sole and treaded outsole.

When should I choose a boot rather than a low-top shoe?

Boots are recommended for: working on uneven ground, where there is a risk of twisting an ankle, protection against foreign objects (sawdust, liquids), working in wet conditions or snow, and where ankle protection is required.

How long do safety boots last on average?

For daily use: entry-level models 12–18 months, mid-range models 18–24 months, premium models 24–36 months. The service life depends heavily on maintenance and conditions of use.

Do I really need GORE-TEX shoes for landscaping work?

Highly recommended! In gardening and landscaping, you work every day in the rain, on dew-covered surfaces, wet grass, in puddles and mud. Ordinary ‘water-repellent’ shoes only keep your feet dry for a short time.

GORE-TEX benefits:

  • 100% waterproof: Even in continuous rain and when standing in puddles
  • Breathable: Sweat can escape, so your feet won’t overheat
  • Durable: Still works reliably even after years of use
  • Health: Dry feet significantly reduce the risk of colds, blisters and athlete’s foot

Expert tip: The extra cost of GORE-TEX (approx. 30–50 EUR) pays for itself within just a few months thanks to greater comfort and longer durability!

What makes the EXTRAGUARD range from ATLAS® stand out in particular?

The EXTRAGUARD range combines extreme durability with exceptional lightness. The innovative EXTRAGUARD® upper is around 40 per cent lighter than leather, whilst being particularly abrasion-resistant and water-repellent. Thanks to GORE-TEX technology, your feet stay dry even in adverse weather conditions. The shoes are also easy to clean and dry significantly faster than conventional safety footwear. They therefore set new standards for comfort, protection and durability – even during demanding work in construction, the trades, industry or forestry.

For which applications are EXTRAGUARD safety shoes suitable?

The EXTRAGUARD range has been developed for the toughest working environments. It is ideal for use on building sites, in road construction and civil engineering, in agriculture, in forestry, and in all sectors where particularly robust and weather-resistant footwear is required. The upper provides reliable protection against moisture, dirt and mechanical stress – even under continuous strain and in extreme conditions.

What protective features do the EXTRAGUARD models offer?

All EXTRAGUARD safety shoes meet at least safety class S3 in accordance with EN ISO 20345. They feature a toe cap (usually made from patented MPU polyurethane), a metal-free puncture-resistant midsole, a slip-resistant and shock-absorbing sole, and a water-repellent GORE-TEX EXTRAGUARD® upper. Many models are also suitable for orthopaedic insoles in accordance with DGUV 112-191, thus offering personalised comfort whilst ensuring maximum safety.
