The difference between S1 and S1P
Unlike S1 safety footwear, which offers protection in the toe area and cushioning in the heel, the S1P class also protects the entire foot from below. This makes them particularly suitable for workplaces where hazards arise from both above and from the ground – without compromising on lightness and comfort.
Puncture protection: S1P, S1PL or S1PS?
The latest standard, EN ISO 20345:2022, now distinguishes between puncture protection in even greater detail. Depending on the material and test method, you can choose exactly the right protection to suit your everyday working life:
1. S1P – The tried-and-tested classic with steel
Today, the designation S1P refers specifically to footwear with steel puncture protection.
- Protection: The steel midsole provides an unyielding physical barrier against sharp objects. It is tested using a standard test nail with a diameter of 4.5 mm.
- Suitability: Ideal for working environments with coarse hazards, such as in heavy industry or in areas where large nails pose a constant threat.
2. S1PL – Metal-free flexibility (textile, 4.5 mm test)
The ‘L’ stands for ‘Large’. This variant features a metal-free textile midsole, which has also been tested with a 4.5 mm nail.
- Protection: Offers reliable protection whilst being significantly lighter. As the sole is made from high-tech textiles, it is extremely flexible and provides thermal insulation (no cold bridges in winter).
- Suitability: Perfect for professionals in logistics or interior fit-out who move around a lot, kneel frequently or climb ladders and require maximum freedom of movement.
3. S1PS – High Precision (textile, 3.0 mm test)
The ‘S’ stands for ‘Small’. This is the highest textile safety level, in which the sole is tested using a significantly thinner test nail (only 3.0 mm in diameter).
- Protection: As a thinner nail concentrates the pressure much more intensely, the material must be exceptionally dense and strong. It offers superior resistance to very fine, sharp objects.
- Suitability: The first choice for assembly workstations, garages or the electrical industry, where fine metal pins or thin splinters pose a risk.
Who are S1P-compliant safety shoes suitable for?
These safety classes are ideal for work in dry environments where there are mechanical hazards from below. These include:

Note: As these models do not have water-repellent properties, they are less suitable for prolonged use in wet outdoor conditions. For such requirements, we recommend safety class S3.
