What are S3 safety shoes and what makes them so special?
The S3 class is the gold standard for safety footwear – and for good reason. It offers the highest level of protection for leather or textile shoes and is designed to provide comprehensive protection for the foot against mechanical hazards and the elements. Whilst S1 footwear is optimised for dry indoor environments, S3 footwear is a true ‘outdoor specialist’. It combines a protective toe cap with a water-repellent upper and a puncture-resistant midsole. With the new standard EN ISO 20345:2022, this class has been further refined to offer you more specific options for puncture protection.
S3 safety footwear meets the following minimum requirements:
- Toe cap: Protection against impact and pressure (200 joules).
- Closed heel area & energy absorption (E): Protects joints and the spine.
- Antistatic properties (A): Prevents electrostatic build-up.
- Water-repellent upper (WPA): Protection against water penetration and water absorption (formerly WRU).
- Profiled outsole: For grip on loose and uneven surfaces.
- Puncture resistance: Protection against sharp objects, now categorised as S3, S3L and S3S.
In short: S3 footwear combines the benefits of S1 and S2 with additional puncture resistance – ideal for rough terrain, wet conditions and hazardous surfaces.
The new standard in puncture protection: S3, S3L and S3S
A precise distinction is now made regarding how the midsole is tested. This helps you find the perfect shoe for your specific risk:
S3 – The classic model with a steel midsole
The standard S3 model features a puncture-resistant steel sole that forms an unyielding physical barrier.
- Key differences: Maximum resistance to very severe hazards. However, steel is less flexible and acts as a cold bridge in winter.
- Intended use: Ideal for heavy building construction, demolition work and track laying, where major hazards such as thick nails or metal struts are prevalent.
S3L – Metal-free comfort (textile, 4.5 mm test)
The ‘L’ stands for ‘Large’. A metal-free textile midsole is used here, which has been tested with a test nail 4.5 mm in diameter.
- Distinguishing features: 100% metal-free, thermally insulating and extremely flexible, enabling a natural rolling motion.
- Intended use: Perfect for general building construction, gardening and landscaping, as well as logistics. Ideal for professionals who spend a lot of time kneeling, climbing or moving around.
S3S – High precision (textile, 3.0 mm test)
The ‘S’ stands for ‘Small’. This high-end textile sole is tested with a significantly thinner nail (3.0 mm), which exerts considerably higher point pressure.
- Distinguishing feature: Offers the lightness of textile whilst also withstanding extremely fine, sharp objects that could penetrate standard fabrics.
- Intended use: The first choice for workshops, assembly areas and industry where fine metal pins, thin nails or splinters pose a hazard.
